President Obama has sent a message to the two Senators who have been tasked to bring Health Insurance to the nation. Senator Edward Kennedy is one of the two Senators who received President Obama's letter. Kennedy chairs the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. He is already reporting a Bill out of his Committee that includes a prominent Public Health Insurance Plan backed by the Federal Government as an option to drive competition among Health Insurance Companies to cut Premiums and make Health Coverage robust.
senator Max Baucus is the other Senator who received President Obama's message. Baucus chairs the Senate Finance Committee, which has not reported a Bill because Republican Senators on that Committee are refusing to compromise on the issue of a Government Health Insurance Plan. (They adamantly oppose it.)
President Obama's message to both Chairs is that he too supports extending to people the option of choosing a Public or Government Health Insurance Plan. Opponents in the Senate reportedly vow never to compromise now (they did not compromise before, either). See Robert Pear, "Obama Open to Mandate That People Own Coverage" p. A14, col. 5 (New York Times Nat'l ed., Thursday, June 4, 2009).
