But What Protections Are There?
An informative newspaper report by Walecia Konrad, "Personal Business/Patient Money/Shopping Around for the Best Prices in Medical Care," p. B5, col. 1 (New York Times Nat'l ed., "BusinessDay" Section, Saturday, November 28, 2009), offers you and your clients various sources for information about providers, procedures and above all their prices for medical care. One sterling piece of advice in the linked newspaper column: "CHECK WITH YOUR INSURER Many insurance companies have begun posting provider prices on their Web sites so enrollees can access cost information."
A useful question must be asked in conjunction with this useful newspaper report, however: Can people check out the malpractice claim history of the providers, and the success or failure rate of the procedures and pills that they find available online or elsewhere?
Information is important. Many States have web sites posting the malpractice claims history of various providers. It is worth your while to research providers rather than making appointments blind so to speak, and to research the procedures and medicines prescribed for you.
