The Midwestern Drought has reportedly damaged not only producers located in the Midwest, but also producers located far from the Midwest. The Wall Street Journal of Thursday, October 11, 2012 reports that a poultry producer in California filed for Bankruptcy citing as a principal reason the "soaring cost of grains used in animal feed," the cost of which is soaring because of losses suffered by Midwestern grain growers stricken by the Midwestern Drought. See Stephanie Gleason and Ian Berry, "Midwest Drought Claims New Victim" p.B1, col. 6 (Wall Street Journal, Thursday, October 11, 2012), published Online with the headline, "Midwest Drought Claims Poultry Producer".
You do not necessarily have to be stricken by catastrophe directly in order to recover on your Commercial Insurance Coverage. If you or your clients are in this situation, losses of this kind may be covered by your own Contingent Business Interruption Coverage. This is Coverage that in basic terms can compensate for covered losses caused by catastrophic events that have stricken third persons such as key suppliers for your products. See, for example, the "Business Interruption" Category on this site.
