We are going to shorten the name of this blog to "Claims and Issues." Although we are dropping the word "Insurance" from the title we are not dropping the content. This blog will still contain many articles addressing insurance issues including the insurance ramifications of many issues which are not included in the reporting about those issues. However, we are not changing the domain name just yet because the host of this blog, Typepad, has scared the heck out of me with what happens when a domain name is changed. They say for example that links and rss may be affected. Better to make a gradual transition I think. So, here is the first article on the newly constructed "Claims and Issues" blog at this time.
Newspaper reports this morning print the press release about many judicial nominations to come from the current administration. That is not news. There is a large number of unfilled federal judgeships. The reports today broadcast the scary pronouncement that lists of nominees may come out every month for the next year. The theme of these press releases and press reports all seem to be the same: Be afraid, be very afraid.
We can expect that soon Senators will 'oppose' many of these nominations before they vote to approve them. Some of the nominees will undoubtedly be unfit to impartially judge even a dog show. So, it is inevitable that some Senators will scream and holler at least about those persons. To borrow a description from Dickens of a similar group, the opposition Senators will resemble an orchestra of scorched cats.
Don't believe their words. And don't listen to them. They have the power to stop unfit judicial nominees. Senators can put a hold on nominations. Under the Senate rules, holding nominations stops the nominations from going forward. That Senator from Oklahoma, what's his name, put holds on all of the nominees and legislation too for that matter, that he did not like. Often, he alone placed a hold on anything; the other 99 Senators approved but could not vote because of the lone hold.
It never bothered him that some people did not like him or his holds. He did it anyway. He had the power to stop what he did not approve.
So do the other Senators at this time as well. Do not let them fool you otherwise.
