(Matt Whittaker / New York Times)
The performance of the Republican candidate at the presidential debate was an open and obvious disaster for the country. And for the Republican Party.
In the Senate, the Majority Leader -- another Republican -- will not even bring a COVID-19 relief bill to the floor that stands a chance to pass the House. That approach has not worked before now, is not working now, and will not work in the future for Republican candidates for the Senate. The powers currently in control of the U.S. Senate need to bring a bill to the floor that stands a chance of becoming law for economic and health care relief in this pandemic. They need to vote for a bill that will enjoy the support of the American people.
Or the Republican Party simply will not survive as a functioning political party, even to the extent that it functions now.
The response to disasters so far has brought another, greater disaster to the United States. It didn't have to be this way, as they say, and it doesn't have to be this way now. Whether or not they say this as well, we cannot continue to live much longer with this disaster.
