The world after COVID came will not be the same as the "old" one was before COVID came. The "new normal" will not be the same as the "old normal" either.
We will have to be prepared to rapidly adjust to events that remind us that we may be done with the pandemic, but the pandemic is not done with us: boosters for those who have not gotten their booster shots, and nonsurgical preventive measures that work like masking and distancing.
If we are prepared to adjust rapidly, we can reopen slowly. But to say again, we will not be "returning" to the old "normal." We will be living a new normal, or we will be living -- and getting sick and dying -- with COVID for a long time to come. Just as we lived, got sick and died in the "old normal" in the first place.
Like most people, I prefer to let data drive the results, rather than have wishful thinking dictate how I and the people around me live, get sick -- and die -- from COVID.
