I heard this yesterday as part of a prayer. Since then, I have been thinking about this concept and it occurs to me that it is rightly part of our prayers, particularly at this time and in this moment.
When you act with justice, you restrain yourself. Natural desires to inflict harm on those who specialize in inflicting harm themselves, for example, are tempered by the realization that you are not the force of justice in this place and at this time.
This is not another way of excusing inaction. You should act. Act with justice.
Oh, Lord, restrain me with your justice. Amen.
