This is the First Sunday of Lent. The Opening Prayer for today's Catholic Mass has this: "In this time of repentance, we call out for Your mercy."
True to form, the men currently in charge of the catholic church condemned having a funeral at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York because the deceased was trans, an atheist, and an activist, take your pick. (Her family requested the Catholic funeral.) Reportedly, the archdiocese was okay with the funeral until it was held and the congregants cheered loudly at the service. They were apparently cheering both for the deceased parishioner and the service. See Liam Stack, N.Y. Archdiocese Condemns Funeral of Transgender Activist at Cathedral, NEW YORK TIMES online, Feb. 17, 2024.
Like clockwork, the powers that be gathered to demonstrate why many, many non-catholics are suspicious, even disdainful of catholic worship. They frequently accuse the catholic leadership of not being Christian.
The leaders that judged sexuality rather than pray would have done well in this instance to heed the Irish saying, "Don't give it to them to say about you."
